Description Resource-based view (RBV) is a popular theory that explains the resources of business firms. Because this theory can be useful for practitioners and academicians in management fields, this study adopts the concept of RBV and Grant (2002) to analyze the success of firms. More specifically, RBV theory can assist firms in selecting key resources and formulating the strategy for deploying these resources to gain competitive advantage. In this connection, the relationship between firm resources and firm performance has been widely investigated in the field of management. There is little knowledge, however, on this issue with regard to the Lao Peopleā€Ÿs Democratic Republic (PDR), particularly for micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). This paper applies the concept of RBV to different gender-headed firms in an effort to examine whether male-headed firms out-perform female- headed firms in Lao MSMEs. Moreover, it investigates the effects of firm resources (human, intangible, and tangible resources) on the performance of both gender-headed firms. The sample consists of 840 observations. The ordered probit models are used to test the performance of male- and female-headed firms for the Lao MSMEs. The empirical results show some differences and similarities that are consistent with previous literature on the subject of Lao MSMEs.
