Description      In the last years, rural tourism has developed very much in Galicia. This sort of tourism is as a consequence of diversification policies in Galician tourist offer and it is used as a dynamic element in rural economies affected by agrarian reconversion measures. Likewise, rural tourism also allows revaluing the tourist patrimony, revitalizing habits, traditions and popular festivals, and fomenting the diffusion of the traditional craftwork and gastronomy. Besides, it is necessary to pay special attention to the protection of the environment and the restoration of historical, artistic and cultural patrimony, in the context of sustainable development theories. In this article, the situation and evolution of rural tourism in Galicia is analyzed from the nineties to the present time. A quantitative view is presented on the basis of its main magnitudes.
     El turismo rural ha experimentado un desarrollo muy importante en Galicia en los últimos años. Este tipo de turismo responde a las políticas de diversificación de la oferta turística gallega, siendo utilizado como elemento dinamizador de la economía rural afectada por las medidas de reconversión agraria. Asimismo, el turismo rural permite poner en valor el patrimonio turístico, revitalizando costumbres, tradiciones populares, fiestas, fomentando la difusión de la artesanía y la gastronomía popular. Además se trata de prestar una especial atención a la preservación y potenciación del medio ambiente natural, al tiempo que se promueve la restauración del importante patrimonio histórico, artístico y cultural, en el contexto de las teorías del desarrollo sostenible. En este trabajo se analiza la situación y evolución del turismo rural en Galicia desde los años 90 hasta la actualidad presentando una visión cuantitativa del mismo a partir de sus principales magnitudes.
