Description |
Due to severe coastal erosion at Pentha, Odisha, east coast of India, agricultural land is prone to sea water intrusion and the life and property of around 50,000 people are at stake. The study analyses the level of social and environmental responsibility of the people and the government in the event of vulnerability due to coastal erosion at Pentha and cites example of the degree of vulnerability of a nearby village at Satabhya due to intrusion of the sea. Lessons learnt from Satabhaya have made the local communities and the government both socially and environmentally responsible to mitigate coastal erosion at Pentha through deployment of Geo-synthetic tubes. The study suggests expansion of coastal environmental education and awareness programmes both within government agencies and local communities to ensure successful implementation of the project.
