Description In western societies, populations are ageing rapidly, need to work longer, technological innovations are changing current professions, and the late economic crisis is deepening the social gap of education in the labour market. A combination of economic depression, rising poverty and national budget pressures could erode the education gains of the past, by reducing the ability of both households and governments to invest in education. For all these reasons, and in light of the aftermath of the European economic crisis of 2008, a new emphasis on lifelong learning and adult learning is needed. Building awareness among learners of all ages, of life choices and their consequences in terms of lifestyles and career prospects, is the basic condition for a sustainable economic and social development. In this paper we review some good practice examples from developed and developing countries that can inspire a coherent strategy for en- hancing economic development, the employability of citizens, and social integration and participation. Keywords: European economy, continuing education, lifelong learning, basic education, further education
