This article generally discusses the social context of the collection of rattan as a commodity for market by the Semaq Beri of Ulu Tembeling. It is also an attempt to understand some of the dynamics of their system and the manner in which they relate to the environment and the larger, dominant society. The discussion also touches on the contribution of the commodity production and subsistence production to the maintenance and reproduction of the Semaq Beri as well as their relations to the national economy.ABSTRAKSecara umum artikel ini membincang tentang konteks sosial kegiatan mengumpul rotan sebagai satu komoditi untuk pasaran, sebagaimana diamalkan oleh golongan Semaq Beri di Ulu Tembeling. Artikel ini juga merupakan satu usaha untuk memahami beberapa dinamik sistem yang mereka amalkan dan cara sistem itu dikaitkan dengan alam sekitar serta masyarakat yang lebih luas lagi dominan. Perbincangan juga menyentuh sumbangkan pengeluaran jenis-jenis komoditi dan sara diri kepada pengekalan dan penghasilan semula golongan Semaq Beri serta hubungan jenis-jenis pengeluaran itu kepada ekonomi nasional.
