This article describes the contribution of the German reformer Wilhelm von Humboldt in the area of education and, particularly, the institution of universities. His views are today in the spotlight in the context of the transformations undergone by society and, consequently, by the university in the maelstrom of the developments connected to globalization. Therefore, the author raises the question of the usefulness of Humboldt’s model in todays conditions examining whether the principles of self-education, unity of teaching and research, as well as those of the, examining ‘loneliness’ and freedom of the teacher can function in our times and contribute to teachers, students but also to society itself.
