Description The paper aims to explore the socio-economic obstacles to women economic empowerment in KPK through a comparative analysis of two urban towns of Peshawar named Old city center and Hayatabad. In the male dominated society of Pakistan, and particularly Peshawar, women lag men in both social and economic spheres of life. The is much stricter for females in the Pakhtun society of KPK. The codes of Pakhtunwali neglect the social and economic status of women and deprive them from economic empowerment. For explicating the economic empowerment situation of Pathan women, a sample of 50 employed females is selected through purposive sampling technique. Data was collected through self-administered structured questionnaires. Statistical tools from descriptive statistics are employed to explore the socio-economic conditions of females in Peshawar and partial correlation analysis is used to present the relationship between relevant socio-economic factors. The result identifies three main variables that are late night working, nature of profession, and working in far places from their homes. These factors are seen to have significant association with women economic empowerment in Peshawar. Other impacting variables include no say in decision making (low level of participation in job decisions, (restricted mobility) no permission to work in far flung areas, (infrastructural difficulties) lack of recreational and transport facilities, inadequate (social and economic) security, lack of official/formal support (negligence of local level leaders and their improper role) in women economic empowerment are the major obstacles that directly and indirectly influence economic empowerment of women in KPK. This paper suggests that a major change in the social setup of household, and a healthier role of government organizations and political leaders to remove all kinds of socio-economic obstacles and to initiate women economic empowerment both at household and societal level.
