Description Proses asimilasi nasal wujud dalam pembelajaran ilmu tajwid terutamanya yang melibatkan hukum nun sakinah. Kata kunci: Fonologi; Teori Optimaliti; nasal; hukum nun sakinah; tajwid Abstract   Nasal assimilation exists in learning tajweed particularly that involves the rule of nuun sakinah. Thus, this study discusses the process of nasal assimilation which existed in the selected rule of tajweed namely Idgham Bila al-Ghunnah. The data were obtained from al-Qur’an al-Karim application software "Software Qhutbah". The data were then analysed by using Optimality Theory (OT) which was proposed by McCarthy, Prince and Smolensky. Nasal assimilation process occurs in the rules of tajweed when there is a nasal sound that is nuun sakinah and tanween in the words. Nasal assimilation process is a process of merging the nasal sound into the following consonant sound. This phonological process would also affect the pronunciation of the words. The results show that the existence of nun sakinah in Idgham Bila al-Ghunnah is blocked in reading when followed by [lam]ل  and [ra] ر . This is because of the places of articulation of these two sounds are adjacent to the nun sakinah which is at the front nasal area. This adjacent place of articulation causes the nun sakinah sound followed by [lam]ل  and [ra]ر to be absorbed and need to be read without any nasalised sounds. This phenomenon is slightly different from other rules of tajweed such as Izhar Halqi, Idgham Maal Ghunnah and Ikhfa’ Hakiki. This study will help reciters to identify the differences in reading for all tajweed rules. Thus, Qur’an reciting can be improved. Keywords: Fonology; Optimality Theory; nasal; nuun’s rules; tajweed
