Description From ancient India and the practice of immoral monetary loans till modern day practices, banking has passed through various phases of change and development over time. The primary objective of this study was to understand the evolution and trends of the Indian banking industry from ancient times to the present age of Information Technology. The methodology included the comprehensive collection of detailed data from various sources. From exhaustive information, necessary data was sifted, compiled, logically analysed and rationally interpreted keeping in mind the facts and trends which have evolved over time. The data collected in this study has largely been obtained from books, journals, Government and financial institutions websites or in some cases prominent national dailies. Appropriate statistical tools, logical comparisons, averages, tabulations, regression and trend analysis methods were involved at every stage. As banks continue their journey through a vibrant and crucial phase, the Indian Banking system now exhibits a fair degree of resilience in responding to structural adjustments and global risks. The Government actively encourages modern banks to run more professionally; effectively integrating technology with traditional ways of banking. It is hoped that this study will be of immense applied value to practicing bankers, finance professionals, teachers, researchers and students.
