Description The present investigation was developed because of the necessity of the entity "Astilleros del Oriente" (ASTOR) of having an objective inventory policy that allows its efficient administration. Therefore, the main objective was guided to offer to the entity a tool for the making of scientifically based decisions. Concluded the investigation, it can be conclude that the inventory models, in particular the probabilistic model with fixed period of backorder, is a tool of great utility for the entity under study. This mathematical model allowed the entity to minimize the costs associated to the inventory, contributing this fact to achieve a bigger efficiency in the financial operability. 
La presente investigación se desarrolló por la necesidad de la empresa "Astilleros del Oriente" (ASTOR) de contar con una política de inventario objetiva que le permita una eficiente gestión del mismo. De aquí que el objetivo principal estuvo encaminado a brindarle a la empresa una herramienta científicamente fundamentada para la toma de decisiones. Finalizada la investigación, se pudo concluir que los modelos de inventario, en particular el modelo probabilístico de inventario con período fijo de reorden, son una herramienta de gran utilidad para la empresa objeto de estudio. Este modelo matemático permitió minimizar los costos asociados al inventario, contribuyendo este hecho a lograr una mayor eficiencia en la operatividad financiera de la empresa.
