Description This paper explores the case of Toys “R” Us in order tounderstand the strategy of private equity-backed firms. It is a firstattempt to investigate the target firm’s strategy from a dynamiccapability perspective. The paper shows that the acquired firmmobilizes resources after acquisition in order to improve itscompetitive strategy within the traditional business. The paperconfirms that the concerns about leverage buyouts areexaggerated because the acquired firm mobilizes resources togenerate long-term growth. Moreover, the paper discussespossible improvements of the corporate strategy implemented byprivate equity-backed firms. After acquisition, private equitymanagement could help push the target firms into developing theresource potentialities in the direction of their diversification.Future quantitative researches could verify the results of thisqualitative work on a larger sample.
