Title Perceptions of Negative Inequity at Work and the Behavior of Individuals

Creator Aidla, Anne

Description The aim of this article is to find out howperceptions of negative inequity at work influence individuals’behavior based on the example of members of Estonianorganizations. Perceptions of inequity are analyzed using JohnStacey Adams’ equity theory, which states that individualscompare the input and outcome of their work with somecomparison base and adjust their behavior according to theequity or inequity they perceive. For example, when they feelnegative inequity they can decrease their input, increaseoutcomes or leave the organization. The empirical study wasconducted in 2011 and 2013 and the final sample consisted of 174members of Estonian organizations. The results showed thatindividuals usually adapt their behavior according to how fair orunfair they are treated in their opinion. In addition, the reactionto perceived negative inequity depends on the respondents’ sociodemographicbackground, including gender, age, position, tenureand education. Consequently, this should be taken into accountwhen negative behavioral consequences are not desired.
