Description This study explores the socio-cultural challenges faced by the female heads of household in Bangladesh. Qualitative thematic analysis was conducted to analyze the interviews with 22 purposively selected female household heads from two communities in northwest Bangladesh. The study revealed that the challenges of female heads differed according to their class position, place of living (rural-urban), and route to the headship. It indicated that the female heads used to face both financial and social challenges like difficulties in child rearing and provoking male behavior. The study also explored that the urban female-heads were more exposed to male indecent behaviors than their rural counterparts. On the other hand, the de-jure female heads were appeared to be more insecure and experienced the social stigma compared to the de-facto heads. The study suggests that appropriate policies and interventions should create income-earning opportunities and a positive social environment where these women can live freely.
