Description While global financial deregulation has led to liberalization of financial services and thus to modernization of commercial banking, industrialized economies are facing a financial meltdown. The health of the major global banking industry is under severe stress, but India continues to be strong. Despite cost prohibitive efforts in the introduction of a range of new products and services, banks in India are striving to emerge from an era of development banking into consumer-oriented supermarkets. This paper studies the Indian banking industry with regard to its readiness to move on to the next generation.
