This article intends to examine the understanding and interpretation of Malaysian Chinese language writers (normally known as Mahua writers) regarding the term 'Mahua Literature'. Generally, it can be said that the Chinese writers are not aware of the ambiguity of the term. The involvement of the Malaysian Chinese writers in the various streams of the literary tradition (whether it be in the Malay, Chinese (Malaysia) or English literature) has resulted in the phenomenon becoming increasingly significant and thus open to various possibilities. The ensuing discussion elaborate on the development and the characteristics of each phase of the development of the Mahua short stories of post 1957 to the end of the twentieth century. It was found that the development of the genre is closely linked to the realism and western-modified modernism of the literary tradition. Indirectly, the development can be understood as intellectual responses of Mahua writers to the socio-political, socio- economic and socio-cultural situations of the country and their impacts on the Chinese community These scenarios had determined the selection of certain themes, tone and mode of expressions, as well as the thoughts of Mahua writers since the past four decades.Keywords: Mahua literature; tributary literature; obsessions; selection of themesABSTRAKMakalah ini cuba menyorot pemnhaman dan interpretasi penulis berbahasa Cina di Malaysia (Mahua) tentang istilah "Sastera Mahua". Rata-rata golongan penulis berbahasa Cina tidak menyedari bahawa wujudnya ketaksaan pada istilah itu sendiri. Di samping itu, penglibatan penulis keturunan Cina di negara ini dalam pelbagai aliran kesusasteraan. sama ada kesusasteraan Cina (Malaysia), kesusasteraan Melayu maupun kesusasteraan Inggeris, telah menjadikan gejala tersebut amat signifikan dan mengundang pelbagai kemungkinan. Perbincangan seterusnya menghuraikan perkembangan cerpen Mahua pasca 1957 hingga penghujung abad yang lalu serta ciri-ciri setiap tahap perkembangannya. Penulis mendapati perkembangan cerpen Mahua sesungguhnya berhubung rapat dengan tradisi penulisan aliran realisme serta pengaruh modernisme Barat yang ditionghuakan. Secara tak langsung, perkembangan tersebut boleh difahami sebagai respon intelektual para penulis Mahua terhadap kedudukan dan gejala sosio-politik, sosio-ekonomi dun sosio-budaya tanah air serta impak ke atas komunitinya. Senario tersebut telah menentukan nada dan kecendenderungan pemilihan tema dan pemikiran di kalangan penulis Mahua sepanjang empat dekad yang lampau.Kata kunci: kesusasteraan Mahua, sastera rantingan, obsesi, pemilihan tema
