Description The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between leadership styles and organizational outcomes within a developed and a developing economy. First this paper reviews existing leadership theories and how different leadership styles will effect on the organizations. Based on the transformational leadership theory and different characteristics of American and Chinese Organizations, some propositions are presented about the differences and similarities about the effects of the leadership styles on American and Chinese organizations. This study is important for several reasons. First, it refines and extends our understanding of leadership dynamics in two different institutional contexts. Scholars are interested in learning if there is a universal style, or if leadership style is contingent on context. As such, this study will contribute to the leadership literature. Second, the discipline of management and leadership is relatively new in developing economies. This study can assist leaders and leadership development consultants help to select, train, and enhance leadership effectiveness in emerging economies. Third, this study can help to understand the different influence of leadership style in developing economies, particularly in China. Lastly limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed.
