Description |
Older adults’ social relations are considered an important aspect in one’s quality of life because it is a source of fundamental psychological reinforcement and it contributes in a significant manner to one’s self-concept. Even though a decline in social activity comes with aging, a history of one’s active social life is carried into older age, so having active social relations still remains important but access to these social activities can prove difficult, especially after retirement. Thus, studies on aging must pay more attention to the meaning of social relations to older persons. This study examines how much older adults’ incomes affects their social relations using data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) survey (Waite et al., 2015) which sampled persons 57-85 years of age (n=3005). It was hypothesized that older adults who have lower income resources will report lower social engagement. The current study’s findings build on a social capital theory to account for how older adults’ financial resources differentially affect their social relations. A directive for future research is to examine more diverse variables that may explain the dynamic relationships between older adults’ demographic factors.
