Consumption is integral part of human life. This process is regulated by objective material needs, by social and economic conditions and also by irrational cravings and marketing manipulations. Main aim of this paper is to show irrational manifestations of consumption in different economic systems. Consumption is often displayed into extremes. On the one hand, insufficient purchasing of basic items, underfeeding, lack of goods, on the other hand, immoderate consumption of luxury items, purchasing of unnecessary things, throwing out of qualitative goods. Consumption reflects virtues and defects of human nature. It leads to discordant results for society and environment. However, today global economy aimed at demand stimulation.
