Description This study clarifies the contents of educational training programs for cashiers at supermarkets and examines the effectiveness of such OJT programs by using an evaluation sheet. Conventional training programs require that trainees follow the instructions on the manuals and this is the only criterion for assessment of their progress in technical skills related to work. However, even though the cashiers become more familiar with their operation, it does not necessarily mean that they have a relatively high competence in responding to customers’ inquiries and complaints promptly. In other words, the accumulation of their experience in the cashier work may not result in higher satisfaction degree from the customers. Cashiers are not only supposed to handle each product in an accurate way, but also learn about the situation through careful observation. In order to further enhance the effectiveness of OJT programs for supermarket cashiers, this study proposes a clear concept and objective for cashier work and provides details instruction on the educational training by drawing up a list to include all the items in an evaluation sheet.
