Description Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la forma en que se instalan los debates en torno a la agricultura familiar enla Argentinaen los últimos años y en particular sobre la necesidad de cuantificar y caracterizar al sector. El interés por conceptualizarla está presente tanto en el ámbito académico-científico, como en el técnico-operativo y también político. El artículo intenta mostrar la heterogeneidad espacial y la diversidad de actores de la agricultura familiar y su relación con su cuantificación. Para ello realizará una breve comparación entre la región más rica de la argentina (la región pampeana) y una de las regiones más pobres (el noroeste argentino). En relación a ello, se abordará los resultados del RENAF (Registro Nacional dela Agricultura Familiar) en la provincia de Santiago del Estero a los efectos de caracterizar al sector y presentar ciertas líneas metodológicas tendientes a una mejor conceptualización. 
This paper aims to analyze the debates about family farming in Argentina during the last years, particularly the need to quantify and characterize the sector. The interest in conceptualization can be found in the academic, technical and politic fields. The article tries to show the spatial heterogeneity and diversity of actors of family farming. Therefore, it includes a brief comparison between the richest region of Argentina (The Pampas) and one of the poorest regions (Northwest). In relation to this, the results of the RENAF (national registry of family farming) in the province of Santiago del Estero are used to characterize the sector and present certain methodological lines aimed at a better conceptualization.
