Description Area of the Study As a significant determinant of job performance of an employee, this study discusses the impact of emotional intelligence on employee job performance. There is an empirical and knowledge gap in the Sri Lankan context on the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance of employees and its impact. Problem of the Study The main objective of this research study is to identify the relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance of banking employees in commercial banks in the Central province, Sri Lanka. The research problem of this study is: Is therea  relationship between emotional intelligence and job performance of banking employees in commercial banks in central province of Sri Lanka? Method of the Study The data were collected from a randomly selected sample of 200 banking assistants in selected commercial banks in Central Province and used a structured questionnaire, which indicate the statements of emotional intelligence and job performance with 5 points Likert scale. The data were analyzed using SPSS computer package and it included the univariate and bivariate analyses. Findings of the Study The finding at the end of the study was that there is a significant positive impact of emotional intelligence on employee job performance. Also, it was proved that there is a significant strong positive relationship between Emotional Intelligence (EI) dimensions and job performance. As per the regression analysis, emotional intelligence has an impact of 67.4% on job performance. Conclusion of the Study It is concluded that there is a significant positive impact on emotional intelligence and employee job performance. In addition, dimensions of EI (self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management) have a positive impact on job performance of the sample. When recruiting management trainees the EI is to be used as a tool of selection and EI programme is to be developed as an intervention to ensure the higher performance in this sector.  Keywords: Emotional Intelligence, Job Performance
