Description The paper attempts a brief restatement of some recent developments in monetary theory. The author then draws some conclusions for the international monetary system. The first of these is that a multiple-currency system is inferior to a two-currency system, so it is advantageous for Europeans to develop a single currency. Second, a two-currency system is inferior to a one-currency system. Finally, welfare is increased if the dollar is used as a medium of exchange. The problems of seigniorage and management are discussed briefly at the end.
