Description This paper formulates and estimates a comparative advantage model of migration in which individuals maximize the value of log earnings, net of moving costs, by choosing between a pair of locations. Using a subsample of males from the 2003 wave of the PNAD, a comprehensive Brazilian national household survey, I construct six measures to assess the impact of migration on earnings. The results do not support the common notion that migrants constitute a positive selected subsample of the population, i.e., that they have unobservable traits which make them more productive than non-migrants at the destination, after controlling for observable characteristics.
Este artigo formula e estima um modelo de vantagem comparativa da migração em que os indivíduos a maximizar o valor dos ganhos de log, líquido dos custos de mover-se, escolhendo entre um par de localizações. Utilizando uma subamostra de homens da onda de 2003 da PNAD, uma pesquisa domiciliar global brasileira, eu construir seis medidas para avaliar o impacto da migração sobre os ganhos. Os resultados não suportam a noção comum de que os imigrantes constituem uma subamostra selecionada positiva da população, ou seja, que têm características observáveis ​​que as tornam mais produtivos que os não-migrantes no destino, após controle para características observáveis.
