This paper critically reviews some of the most important methods used to test the hypothesis of deterioration of the terms of trade for primary commodities. New tests using both time and frequency domain analysis for the periods 1948-1989 and 1921-1986 are presented. The results obtained support the hypothesis that there is a long-run deterioration of the terms of trade for primary commodities.
O artigo traz uma revisão crítica dos métodos mais importantes até então desenvolvidos para testar a hipótese de deterioração dos termos de intercâmbio das mercadorias primárias. Mostrou-se que o dilema entre poder do teste e generalidade das suposições pode ser importante quando se testa esta hipótese. Utilizando-se algumas suposições tradicionalmente aceitas como verdadeiras e métodos tanto no dominio temporal, como no frequencial, mostrou-se que a hipótese de não-deterioração pode ser rejeitada. |
