Description |
The issues of demography, refugees, and ethnic cleansing are as central to most ethnonationalist conflicts as they are to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Settlement of the refugee problem is a sine qua non for Palestinian agreement to end the conflict. The return of Palestinian refugees into Israel, however, arouses deep fears among Israelis. Palestinians view themselves as victims of past expulsions and are anxious about another possible ethnic cleansing. Demographic ratios between the protagonists — as well as processes or events which may significantly alter them — are therefore pivotal. |
