Description |
On 25 July 2002 a group of squatters, led by the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP), occupied an empty apartment building on King Street West in Toronto's Parkdale neighborhood. The date coincided with World Youth Day, a global mega-festival for young Catholics. The highlights of the one-week event were several pilgrimage spectacles, including a vigil and a mass in which Pope John Paul II participated. While the streets of Toronto had the world's attention, the OCAP squatters hoped to capture some of the spotlight with their protest action.
