The development of the Canadian economy presents an interesting case of capital accumulation and class formation which can be interpreted from quite divergent theoretical perspectives. One view draws on dependency theory;' stressing similarities between the Canadian experience and the dependent pattern of underdevelopment in the Third World. According to this interpretation Canada's position in the world economy has been that of a satellite to larger and more advanced metropolitan centres, first France, then Britain, and presently the United States.?
