Description InJune 1977, a small independent union in British Columbia--the Service, Office and Retail Workers Union of Canada (SORWUC)--broke through the defences set up by
the chartered banks and gained certification of several bank branches under the provisions of the Canada Labour Code. This achievement was hailed as the beginning of a movement that would result in the unionization of a previously unorganized sector of the economy.
