Description |
NPV analysis is used to evaluate overall costs and benefits in the cigarette industry in Indonesia. This research concludes that the existence of the cigarette industry is shown to cause losses to society, based on a negative NPV value using a normal discount rate of 24% (Moll, 1989) and an IRR of 27%. An IRR value of 27% is too high compared with the current interest rates in Indonesia of 12% to 15%. Based on the results of the analysis, it is hoped that the government will determine policy related to the existence of the cigarette industry in Indonesia paying particular attention to overall societal welfare. The government should not only weigh the benefits received, but also weigh the losses which must be carried by others in society. The cigarette industry should develop research to try to find new products with safer materials so that cigarette consumption by both active and passive smokers is not as dangerous to consumers' health. Smokers should be more aware of the threat from cigarette consumption as active smokers, as well as for their families as passive smokers.
