Description In recent years subjective evaluations about own quality of life, resumed in levels of life satisfaction or happiness, are gaining importance as indicators of development. Some authors state that subjective well-being is a necessary and sufficient condition for human development. In this work the arguments of
these authors are explained and it is discussed the role subjective evaluations must play on development studies. The main conclusion is that although it is necessary to integrate subjective well-being into human
development studies we cannot identify subjective well-being and development.

En los últimos años las valoraciones subjetivas sobre la calidad de vida propia, resumidas en niveles de satisfacción vital o felicidad, están adquiriendo protagonismo como indicadores de desarrollo. Algunos autores afirman que el bienestar subjetivo es condición necesaria y suficiente para el desarrollo humano. En este trabajo se exponen los argumentos esgrimidos por dichos autores y se discute el papel que debe tener el bienestar subjetivo dentro del estudio del desarrollo. La principal conclusión es que, aunque es necesario incorporar el bienestar subjetivo al estudio del desarrollo humano, no se puede identificar bienestar subjetivo y desarrollo.
