Description “If you want to get along, go along.” —Sam Rayburn. I first read the Rayburn quote in political science class. We were studying policy making and why politics as usual often prevails. One explanation was the Rayburn adage. Elected officials get ahead through alliances and accommodation. Going against the establishment can sideline a promising career, can leave the principled politician tilting at windmills.
