Description Acknowledging the accession, and as a result,joining the European Union in May 2004 requiredPoland to make a number of changes, including anumber that related to labor rights. These changeswere partially based on resolving legal barriers inPolish law in order to bring them into compliancewith the European Union's law. These efforts arereflected in the laws related to the so-calledemployee participation. Generally speaking, thisis the right of workers to co-manage and beconsulted in the activities of the enterprise forwhich they work. The most important provisionsin this regard (those which Poland had toimplement in the past few years) are, amongothers, the directives on the development of theEuropean Works Councils and on the right ofworkers to establish councils of workers withintheir company. When the European Parliamentand the Council of the European Unionestablished the directives which referred toemployee participation, it was the result of the promotion of social dialogue betweenrepresentatives of management andrepresentatives of workers (which is a particulargoal of the EU community and its member states).Unfortunately, in Poland these rights are nothonored for the majority of employees.
