Description Introduction Across the world, Indigenous peoples, encapsulated within
a variety of political systems and embracing a diversity of cultures, share a
common material reality. People who are Indigenous are much more likely
to be economically disadvantaged than their non-Indigenous counterparts.2
Social and economic indicators from around the world confirm the high
rates of poverty, unemployment, poor educational outcomes, ill health,
family violence, and high rates of suicide and incarceration that are prominent
in Indigenous communities.3 Indigenous peoples represent the most
socially and economically marginalized populations around the globe.4 In
Australia, Indigenous people are recognized as the most disadvantaged group
within Australian society.
