Description |
In liberal theory, the state is considered to be an institution that stands outside and above society. In Marxist theory the state is not an independent institution, but an apparatus for the exercise of power rooted in the class structure of society. The contrast between these views derives not so much from the point about the relationship between the state and society as from the point about the class relations in society.
